Summer Adult Wheel Throwing Class: Pit Firing
Only 1 spot open!
Class Description:
Expand your pottery repertoire and learn about the ancient and traditional method of pit firing! This alternative method of firing outdoors creates decorative work with unique surface results depending on placement in the pit, design, the use of organic materials, minerals, and metals to create flashes and blushes of color, and surface texture. Students can focus on wheel-thrown or hand-built works that are suited for decorative use during the six weeks of designing and finishing work for the firing. A list of materials to gather for the firing and to create surface patterns and colors will be provided to students after registration. Should students choose to experiment with varying surfaces, such as washes or terra sigillata, materials and instruction can be supplied for an additional fee if they opt to incorporate these surface techniques. Pots will be reduction-fired outdoors, onsite, using natural material on Sunday, August 10th (all day). Students should have advanced beginner to intermediate experience with throwing or hand-building. Adults 18 and over.
Dates: Wednesdays, June 25th – July 30th, 6-8:30 p.m., Outdoor firing date: Sunday, August 10th.
Class fee: (member): $298, (non-member): $318. Several pounds of clay and firing are included in the class fee, and additional clay and firing are available for purchase.
