Winter Adult Class: Carving Intensive

Class Description:

This new class is geared toward potters with experience wheel-throwing who want to learn more about the various techniques and tools for carving clay. Wheel thrown vessels conducive to carving will be demonstrated, as well as trimming techniques. Carving techniques such as sgraffito, inlay, fluting, relief, repeat patterns, and others will be introduced. A wide range of tools available specifically to create a variety of lines and textures will be demonstrated and available for students to try. Students must be able to center, pull, and shape forms, including bowls, cylinders, vases, and plates on the pottery wheel. Adults aged 18 and over.

Dates: Wednesdays, January 14th – March 11th, 6-8:30 p.m. (There will be no class on February 18th)

Class fee:
Class including clay: (member): $290. Class fee (non-member): $310. Class, without clay (member): $267. Class fee (non-member): $287. Clays used in class must be the stoneware or porcelain previously purchased from the studio. A firing credit is included in all class fees.  Additional clay and firing are available for purchase. Porcelain clay is also available. Please choose the porcelain clay upgrade option for this type of clay.

Required tools: basic wheel throwing kit*, 2-3 12” hardboard, Medex or plastic bats

Optional tools: a bat system such as those made by StudioPro, Northstar, or Dirty Girls.

Open Studio Membership:

Access to the studio for students enrolled in private or 8-week classes during the current session. Includes: 8-week full access during open studio hours and use of all equipment, including wheels, slab roller, extruder, table space, as well as community tools. Fee: $120
