Pretty Slabs: Dropped, Pressed and Decorated Workshop with Colleen McCall

$265.00

Workshop Description:

Join us at azure arts studio for a two-day specialty workshop with guest artist Colleen McCall. Colleen is a full-time studio potter and teaching artist specializing in creating vibrant floral patterns on her handmade pottery. Her inspiration varies from natural, realistic blooms to stylized abstract florals. Vintage textiles, wall coverings, and historical depictions of flowers from all over the world are all part of the mix to create fresh, functional, heirloom-quality dinnerware, home, and garden decor.

Colleen will demonstrate step-by-step techniques for making her colorful, joyful signature works from flat clay slabs, molding them into the desired forms using slump and hump techniques. Learn more about how she creates beautiful surfaces by combining textures, carved clay stamps, hand-painting techniques, and sgraffito. Colleen will also discuss sources of inspiration for her work, favorite tools, process, and studio workflow.

Put the techniques learned into practice, creating your own molded forms using Colleen’s molds. Spend some time creating your own uniquely shaped drop mold that can be bisque-fired for future play and experimentation. Try out various surface techniques on your freshly molded forms to discover your unique style or favorite method. Enjoy the thoughtful process of putting form and surface together.

Additionally, each participant will receive a prepared leatherhard bud vase made in Colleen’s studio with her dark brown stoneware clay and coated with porcelain slip. Use one of Colleen’s patterns or your own inspiration while learning how to transfer your design ideas from paper to clay. Hand-paint with a wide selection of vibrant underglazes and complete the process with sgraffito for a bold graphic line.

Dates: Saturday, May 16– Sunday, May 17, 2026, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day

Experience Level: This workshop is geared toward students with a basic knowledge of working with clay in its various stages.

Fee: $265 per student. An array of tools, clay, and materials will be provided. A list of required tools will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop if they would like to bring their own. Glazing, bisque firing, and glaze firing of the work can be arranged separately, as requested. Do you want to take a class, but find it difficult to pay the full amount at this time? If so, contact Christina at the email or phone number below to discuss a multiple payment option.
