Guest Artist Workshop, Altered Surfaces: Intricate Carving with Marc Leuthold

$345.00

Saturday, May 25, 2024 - Sunday, May 26, 2024, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. daily

Guest artist Marc Leuthold, internationally acclaimed ceramic sculptor will return to azure arts studio to teach a two-day workshop sharing carving techniques. Leuthold’s sculptures have entered the collections of the Metropolitan and Brooklyn Museums and the Museum of Arts and Design. Critic John Perreault has remarked: “One looks and looks for artists who break up history, who bend the descent, who force one to connect the dots in new ways, even turn away from some. Leuthold is one of these.” The son of European immigrants, Leuthold is interested in cross-cultural experiences. His work reflects the influence of the arts of Europe and North America but also that of Asia, Africa, and the Mediterranean. Leuthold is a Professor at the State University of New York and has taught at Princeton University and Parsons School of Design. He is one of 75 Americans who is an elected lifetime member of the International Academy of Ceramics. To see more of Marc’s work visit his website.

Workshop:

Marc will demonstrate thrown forms on the wheel as well as using other methods for creating sculptural works. Students will be carefully guided through a variety of methods for creating unusual surface texture. Through individual exploration participants will carve sculptural pieces of their own while observing the nuances of working with clay in this way. Discover how a humble kitchen paring knife can create active textured surfaces by carving thick leather hard clay including boxes, cups, and sculptural forms. Delve into the magic of carving bone dry clay as well. The workshop will provide students with an array of new ideas and beginnings to continue to explore both functional and sculptural work.

Skill Level:

This workshop is geared for students with a knowledge of working with clay in its various stages. Some hand building and/or wheel throwing experience is required to prepare pieces for the workshop.

Fee:

$345 per student for this 2-day workshop.

Materials / Preparation:

Participants must bring at least 2-3 leather-hard pieces to the workshop that are ready for carving. If participants do not have access to a wheel or clay studio, contact Christina at least 2-week in advance of the workshop to arrange for the use of azure arts studio and equipment. Students will be provided specifications for the leather-hard pieces, as well as a general tool and supply list prior to the workshop. Bisque, glazing and glaze firing of work at azure arts studio can be arranged separately, if desired.

For recommendations on accommodations in the Richfield Springs/Cooperstown area or for more information, email Christina at christina@azureartisans.com or call 315 858-8899.
